A.V. Club Austin Food Reviews

Here, you can read the 12 articles I wrote in my monthly restaurant review column for the Austin branch of the A.V. Club.

For each one, I had to pitch concepts to the city editor for approval. I researched topics and compiled information on subjects. I created articles that work equally well for print and web. Movin’ On Up to the East Side

Depending on the source, the changing landscape of East Austin is either a good thing (“It’s raising the quality of life!”) or a horrible disaster (“It’s a culture-destroying march of gentrification!”). Nevertheless, several East Side restaurants tout their connection to the neighborhood’s rich history right in their names, all the while aiming to create unique spins on established American cuisine. The A.V. Club visited three such East Austin eateries to see how they successfully merge the old with the new.

Successfully Eating Excessively

Texans regularly shoot for first place in everything from football to national high school rocket challenges (Go Rockwall-Heath Hawks!). Austinites don’t shy away from this fight for national bragging rights either, so why do we lag far behind five other major Texas cities that, according to Men’s Health, fall within the top 10 fattest in the United States? In an effort to help Austin residents give up their willpower and abs and indulge in more waist-expanding foods, The A.V. Club took a slow, belabored breath-inducing adventure around town to sample worthwhile, scale-tipping meals.
