Time, Space, And Improv: The Professor Doesn’t Fear Any Of Them
Improvised stories in the vein of Doctor Who
A simple-looking blue door opens and a tall, lanky man walks out with two companions at his side, ready to fight off alien invaders or halt the unraveling of the timestream. This isn’t Doctor Who. This is The Professor. He (or she, as the case will be for three nights) may seem incredibly similar to The Doctor, but that’s just a coincidence. Or a hiccup in the space time continuum that created a parallel universe. More likely though, it’s an improvised show called The Professor: Improv Inspired By Doctor Who that’s based off the popular BBC TV series.
Every Friday and Saturday from March 23 to April 21 at Salvage Vanguard Theater (2803 Manor Road, 78722), the cast of The Professor brings to life a new, full episode with time travel, aliens, humor, and yes, even pathos. This is also a first for Gnap! Productions, bringing in an externally created show. Last year, The Professor had a successful six-week run at The Institution Theater as the first regular show to perform at the freshman theater. The cast has upped the ante with this production though by adding a female Professor (something Doctor Who still hasn’t done in its almost 50 years of existence) and a set that includes a spinning TARDIS door. It’s not necessary to be a fan of Doctor Who to enjoy The Professor, however. Every episode is self-contained and easily understood without prior Who knowledge, and it can be downright hilarious. The show can also be chill-inducing or tear-jerking. Much like Doctor Who, The Professor plays on all of your emotion and often does so in the same episode.
“A unique experience that captures a bit of the heart of Doctor Who, including a budget even smaller than the classic series. It is obvious that the performers are all Whovians, and were having great fun improvising new stories in the spirit of the series,” says Jeff Johannigman, event organizer of The Austin Doctor Who Meetup group.
There will be three Professors throughout the run (and two regeneration episodes, if you know what that means). They are: Peter Rogers, Mike Ferstenfeld, and Karen Jane DeWitt. The show’s regular cast features a wide assortment of Austin improvisers, including: Ryan Austin, Lacy Shawn, Emily Breedlove, Katie Thornton, Colin Bates, Clay Towery, Quinn Buckner and Lindsey Reeves.
Join the Professor and his companions as they travel through their door-shaped TARDIS to anywhere and anywhen in search of new adventures through improv.
