The Hideout Theatre Starts Your Weekend a Day Earlier Now

Three troupes for only three dollars

January 14, 2009

It’s Thursday night. You could go to another bar, but that scene is getting old and happy hour is winding down anyway. Besides, you don’t want to spend all your money in yet another club or bar. There’s nothing good at the movie theater you haven’t already seen and that band you like doesn’t play until Saturday night. What do you do? If you’re looking for something entertaining and inexpensive to do on Thursday nights, The Hideout Theatre (617 Congress Avenue) has just the thing.

For three dollars every Thursday at 8 PM, The Hideout Theatre showcases three different troupes in their new Thursday Threefer show, with one troupe headlining each month’s shows. While the shows are mostly filled with improv troupes that use different formats (long-form narrative, montage, games, etc.), the odd sketch troupe will also make an appearance. Other than alliteration, the reason for the move from its long-standing Friday night slot to its new Thursday slot is a simple one, says Roy Janik.

“The Threefer is moving to Thursdays to expand the theater’s weekly line-up,” said Janik, current artistic director for the Austin Improv Collective and one-fourth of the improv powerhouse Parallelogramophonograph. “We’re excited to give a different troupe the headlining slot each month to do with that they wish. First up is an Austin favorite, The Starter Kit, whose sense of play is always infectious.”

That infectious play, along with an adventurous spirit to play different formats and a clearly evident connection among its four members, has made The Starter Kit a dependably entertaining troupe. One second, they make you roar with laughter at the boy so full of steroids that his pinky explodes when his grandfather takes him to the emergency room. The next moment, you tear up (while laughing) when you watch a widow haunted by her ghost husband as she watches his murderer’s trial on Court TV and stuffsher face with frozen wedding cake.

If seeing The Starter Kit headline January’s Thursday Threefer shows wasn’t enough, don’t forget the other two troupes performing. For three dollars, how could you not go?
