The Starter Kit Celebrates Their One-Year Anniversary this Friday
May 12 – 16, 2008

As summer begins to make its presence known in Austin with temperatures starting to peak into the 90s already people are looking to escape into a theater, live or film, to enjoy the air-conditioned environment and available entertainment. This Friday, The Starter Kit wants to provide people with an even better reason to come inside The Hideout Theatre when it celebrates its one-year anniversary.

The Starter Kit began performing as a troupe in May, 2007, and has been going strong since then. In its first few months as a troupe, The Starter Kit won the first cagematch tournament of the year at the ColdTowne Theater. They went on to become regulars in the Threefer Madness and Double Barrel slots on Friday evenings at The Hideout Theater, along with opening for Parallelogramophonograph in their regular 8 PM show at ColdTowne. This year, they’ll make their first appearance in the annual Out of Bounds Improv Festival here in Austin. They quickly became local favorites of other improvisers in town.

“More than once, Kareem Badr (of Parallelogramophonograph) has told me after a Starter Kit show that we’re insane. We get that a lot, actually,” says TSK member Justin Davis. “I’m pretty sure that’s meant as a compliment because people are usually laughing and quoting lines from a show when they say it. We’re proud of making the crazy flow logically. That’s not going to change any time soon because we have quite the trick up our sleeves for the anniversary show. I don’t know if I want to give away the surprise, but we’ve all made plans not to wear white T-shirts on stage.”

As the Austin improv scene continues to grow in size and variety, the fight to get noticed becomes harder with each new day. The Starter Kit isn’t worried though. Their ability to change formats depending on the show and different styles present within their own troupe helps keep them fresh. The Starter Kit may be growing out of its infant stage, but hopes to celebrate many more birthdays and provide many more laughs down the road.
